Authentic?

Think about the messages you hear about yourself. They might be messages that you tell yourself and they might come from others. For one day, keep track of all of the messages that you receive from others and all of those you tell yourself.

For example…

I’m lazy “

Is the message true or false?

“ I’m lazy “ feels true because I’m tired and I don’t accomplish as much as I want.

Is this a message you would like to hold on to or one you would like to dismiss?

“ I’m lazy “ is a message that doesn’t make me productive. I work hard and I accomplish a lot. If I notice this message again from myself or others I’ll remember I’m letting it go.

Sometimes it’s helpful to think about where the messages came from and if you really want them to define you anymore.

“ I’m lazy “ is a mean way to self-motivate. There are better ways of finding energy to accomplish what I want. I can be compassionate to myself and accomplish a lot when I am rested and have the energy.

Give this exercise a try and see what you learn about your authentic self!
