Finding the Right Psychologist In Denver, Colorado

Support for insomnia

Do you live in the Denver Metro area? Have you searched the Internet and become overwhelmed with how many people seem to provide therapy? Did you search for a therapist near you and get a link to someone in a completely different area? Here are the top five tips you can use to streamline your search.

Qualification:

You might be wondering what the difference is between psychology, psychotherapy, counseling, or coaching.  Regardless of the specific educational background or treatment modality of the professional you hope to see, I recommend that your search is limited to those who have an active license in mental health. Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers are examples of mental health professionals who have graduate training and supervised experience in mental health.

Availability:

Before you get too set on who you want to see, check and see if that person has the availability to see you when you need an appointment. Don’t get discouraged if you find that the first few people you call are full. Often they will have recommendations of other psychotherapists who have current openings.

Location:

Confirm the office is located somewhere you can easily get to regularly. If you are interested in Telehealth (video-based therapy), confirm that the therapist provides that as well.

Cost:

What’s your budget for therapy? Providers will most often list their fees on their websites. If you are interested in seeing someone who is in-network with your insurance company, you will want to confirm that they are still on that panel. These lists are frequently out of date, so you just want to make sure.

Coolness:

While reading about the people you are interested in working with, do you have a good feeling? As you search, who seems to already know what you want to work on? Do you feel excited to get to work? Does this person speak directly to the issues you have? Do you feel a connection?

Compared to other cities Denver is still small. But it’s big enough to be overwhelming when it comes to finding the right therapist to help you through tough times. Hang in there, research your options and reach out to take the next step if you think your next therapist could be me.
